The Philippine Military Academy (PMA) is the premier military institution of the country and is the training ground for future officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. It is located 10 kilometers south of downtown Baguio in a 373-hectare military installation named in honor of the hero of Tirad Pass, Gen. Gregorio H. del Pilar. Its mission is:
“To instruct, train, and develop the cadets so that they will possess the character, the broad and basic military skills, and the education essential to the pursuit of a progressive military career.”
Act No. 175 promulgated by the Philippine Commission became the basis for the creation of the Philippine Constabulary in August 8, 1905. It was in Sta. Lucia Barracks in Manila where the school for the officers of the constabulary was 1st located but it was relocated in Baguio’s Site known as Constabulary Hill. In honor of the 1st chief of the Philippine Constabulary it was later renamed Camp Henry T. Allen.
With a two year curriculum and with the passage of the Jones Law, the school was later changed to “Academy for officers of the Philippine Constabulary.”
In 1935, commonwealth government was established, in place of the Philippine Constabulary Academy, the Philippine Military Academy was created. The PMA was authorized to maintain a cadet strength of 350, under the National Defense Act.
In June 1936, the academy transferred to Teachers Camp, because of increased population, it remained until WWII broke out.
PMA headquarters, after the war, was temporarily relocated at Camp Murphy and later at Alabang, while Camp Allen was being rehabilitated. April 1947 when PMA was back to its original home in Camp Allen, but because of overcrowding they had to transfer to Loakan. At last, PMA found its permanent home at Fort del Pilar, Loakan, Baguio City in May 1950.
